Venice Film Festival

The lineup of the 78th Venice International Film Festival, which will be held in September, has been unveiled.

The film festival announced a total of 92 invitations on its official website on Wednesday.

A total of 21 films were invited to the competition category “Venetia 78,” which determines the main character of the Golden Lion Award.

The opening film “Parallel Mothers” directed by Spanish master Pedro Almodovar, “Mona Lisa and Bloodmoon,” starring Korean actor Jeon Jong-seo, and “Spencer,” a movie about Princess Diana, were named.

It also included Jane Campion’s new film “The Power of the Dog,” which is well-known in Korea for its “Piano,” and Paolo Sorrentino’s “Hand of God,” an Italian master who was noted for his films “Youth” and “Great Beauty.”

While the proportion of non-European films is generally high, with the largest number of Italian films ever recorded, non-European films such as the U.S., Argentina, Mexico, Australia and the Philippines have also been invited one by one.

Twenty-one were selected for the non-competitive category and 41 for the “Orizzonti” category, which shows new trends in global films.

Korean films were not included in the invitation list. Last year, director Park Hoon-jung’s “Night of Paradise” was invited to the non-competition category.

The Venice Film Festival will be held from September 1 to 11 on the island of Lido.

In the wake of the coronavirus 19, it is expected to take place under strict quarantine rules as last year. Director Bong Joon-ho, who directed “Parasite,” will be the chairman of the panel.
